An AAUP report on "Trends in the Academic Labor Force, 1975-2015" compares "tenure line" (tenured and tenure-track professors) with "contingent" faculty (everyone else), concluding that 70 percent of the academic labor force is "contingent," that is, composed of those without hope of tenure.
What followed was the AAUP investigation chaired by Harry Beal Torrey of Reed College.

However, their use tends to increase the workloads of full-time faculty members who must oversee their work and spend time mentoring them as teachers (AAUP, 2000).
