In 1988, ATM was chosen as the switching and multiplexing technique for
B-ISDN. The ATM standard is designed to efficiently support high-speed digital voice and data communications.
Supports up to four clear/ encrypted full-duplex channels on two
B-ISDN circuits, capable of independent routing.
Although ATM was standardized as a transport vehicle of wide-area
B-ISDN (Broadband-Integrated Digital Services Network) services, the data communication community quickly recognized it as a potential data communication transport technology.
