Heightening awareness of the ways in which groups like the Cardinal Newman Society, the Knights of Columbus and other conservative Catholic organizations work to suppress diversity of opinion or even questioning within our church is of vital importance for all who believe that faithfulness to the Gospel does not demand unthinking obedience to doctrine.

The US has its own Catholic educational landscape, and it happens to come with a self-appointed watchdog--the Cardinal Newman Society (CNS).
One Catholic university president calls the Cardinal Newman Society "a small group of fundamentalist ideologues." Another Catholic college president says the organization provides "a great service to the Catholic church in America."
--Patrick Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society, a conservative campus group, suggests that inviting Hillary Clinton to a Catholic university is akin to inviting Hitler to the Vatican.
Adoration appeals because it facilitates a "passive spiritual experience," said Adam Wilson, a spokesman for the Virginia-based Cardinal Newman Society. "It's a place where our Lord reaches out to the person, with the person having to do nothing but be present to our Lord."
One of the groups that has chosen to make an issue of Commencement speakers is the Cardinal Newman Society, a conservative Catholic organization based in Virginia, and established in 1993 with the lofty goal of bringing about "the renewal of Catholic identity in Catholic institutions of higher education." In 2004 alone, the society opposed at least 25 Commencement speakers and honorees.
Notwithstanding Pope Benedict XVI's suspect celebration of Newman as a paragon of faithful support of the papacy's dogmatism on issues that have failed to pass the test of acceptance by the faithful, one wonders whether the Cardinal Newman Society, that ultra.
