As you will see when you read "
E Pluribus Unum," my intention is not to argue against diversity and immigration but to point out that if we do nothing, the reweaving of our communities may take half a century, judging from our past experience.
But each state government also has its own systems to examine, and, under the principle of
e pluribus unum, state auditors have banded together to determine how serious the problem is for them.
Chief among them: "
E Pluribus Unum." The irony was no doubt lost on the tone-deaf freshmen.
Will not that benefit all Americans who believe in
e pluribus unum?
James Banks, director of the Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Washington, Seattle, suggests that multiculturalism offers a new way of viewing
E Pluribus Unum. "You cannot take the many and make them one by imposing the one on many," Banks writes.
A discussion of pluralism, references to the founding fathers, and a definition of
e pluribus unum seem a little outdated, but they are appended with the inspiring suggestion that if a political viewpoint is not represented in a current organization, a person can start his or her own party: "You are now a Founding Father or Founding Mother."
In the twenty-first century, it's more important to remember why "
E Pluribus Unum" ("Out of Many, One") is written on America's currency!
Eisenhower signed a measure making ''In God We Trust'' the national motto, replacing ''
E Pluribus Unum'' ("Out of many, one'').
