A television program hosted by Armstrong's son and apparent successor, Garner Ted Armstrong, was one of the nation's most popular religious programs and was syndicated all over the world.
After his excommunication, Garner Ted Armstrong founded the Church of God International - but was asked to step down in 1995 after a Texas woman accused him of sexual assault.
Tim Sitterley, pastor for the Worldwide Church of God in Eugene, said his church no longer subscribes to many of the tenets preached by Garner Ted Armstrong. But that doesn't erase Armstrong's stature as one of the "very first dominant figures in television ministry," Sitterley said.
Garner Ted Armstrong graduated from Eugene High School in 1947, the same year his father moved the church's headquarters to Pasadena, Calif., because of the broadcasting facilities there.
