The US-based
Health Effects Institute in 2010 found that each year, air pollution killed 3,000 people in Delhi, which had particulate matter four times above the national standard.
The US
Health Effects Institute analysed around 700 worldwide health-pollution studies, and found that there was a clear health risk for those living near arterial roads or highways.
The results come from the first phase the Advanced Collaborative Emissions Study, or ACES, a five-year project being conducted by the Coordinating Research Council and the
Health Effects Institute.

Last April, at the annual conference of the
Health Effects Institute in Scottsdale, Ariz., Chaitman reported that his own preliminary and as-yet unpublished findings indicate no rise in arrhythmias among 31 patients with coronary artery disease who exercised after breathing low levels of carbon monoxide, even though these patients displayed "relatively high [preexisting] rates of arrhythmias."
