The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative is a nonprofit scientific organisation whose mission is to develop vaccines and other biomedical innovations that prevent HIV infection.
Based on this approach, the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute and International AIDS Vaccine Initiative have proposed to jointly develop a vaccine.
"My colleagues and I are more optimistic to be able to find vaccine and end the epidemic than we have been in years," Rick King of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) told reporters before the conference.

A review of HIV incidence in 1,834 men who have sex with men (MSM) was drawn from a larger study of "at risk" populations in Kenya (Mombasa and Nairobi) and South Africa (Cape Town) being conducted by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. It found that MSM may now be at considerably higher risk of acquiring HIV than heterosexual women (largely sex workers) and heterosexual men who bought sex.

The first is the creation of public-private partnerships (PPPs) that capitalize on the strengths of the public and private sectors such as the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and the Global Aids Vaccine Alliance launched in 2000 (GAVI); the second is the global connection of researchers, government agencies and international organizations under the Global HIV/AIDS Vaccine Enterprise (GHAVE) with an aim to coordinating research, knowledge sharing and capacity building; and the third is the infusion of funding spearheaded by philanthropic partners including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (the Gates Foundation) and the creation of PPPs such as the United States' Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery (CAVD).
Because the vaccine contained three key pieces of the virus, "we want to know what parts stimulated the immune response," says Wayne Koff, vice president of research and development for the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.
