When news of the Soviet decision making Birobidzhan a Jewish autonomous region was heard, it decided to immediately hold a celebration on 9 June and make it part of its anti-fascist work.
In 1934 the Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR) was established in the Soviet Union.
The conference pledged to raise $1 million to support refugees in Stalingrad and Birobidzhan and to accelerate the industrial and cultural development of the Jewish Autonomous Region. Prominent guests and speakers included New York Congressman Emanuel Celler, Senator Elbert D.
