It would have just been like sitting in New Orleans and drinking a
mint julep on the verandah or pretending we are in Gone With the Wind.
The traditional tipple was a post-meal glass of sherry, brandy or popular cocktail
Mint Julep, a blend of bourbon, sugar, water and mint leaves.
The bourbon-based
Mint Julep, typically associated with Southern cuisine and the Kentucky Derby horse race in early May, can be doctored up as a holiday or winter warmer.
But I cannot do it while I am at work because a) it will look bad; b) my head already smells like a
mint julep; and c) I work for a company with a no-alcohol policy, and nobody will believe that I have a bottle of gin in my drawer because I need to pour it on my head because I bought the wrong shampoo.
For rookies who haven't experimented with a
Mint Julep (almost 120,000 are served over the two-day Kentucky Derby race meeting), a Manhattan or Old Fashioned, the trend for old-school, classic cocktails has helped spur the boom in bourbon which can be sipped neat or mixed.
The other candles in the collection smell like Kentucky Derby, an aromatic toast to the
mint julep, and Ale 8, a locally made ginger-citrus flavored soft drink.
CAN you imagine a Superbowl final without hot dogs or a Kentucky Derby sans a
Mint Julep, or an English Premier League match without the lager fumes blowing across the stadium?
RECREATE the fun of this weekend's Derby Festival at Epsom Downs with a
mint julep using Woodford Reserve bourbon.
To concoct an adult version, add a little bourbon, sit in a rocking chair on the front porch and sip on a
mint julep. This iced tea punch will also make a nice marinade for grilled chicken.
The traditional choice for mojitos and
mint julep. Also good added to lemonade or iced tea.
Ernestine Anderson was far more accommodating to the loping Basle brand of swing in "One
Mint Julep" and "Never Make Your Move Too Soon," though "Street of Dreams" was mismatched to a bossa nova groove.
