While both partners may individually participate and benefit at some level from research sponsored by
National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), unique studies funded through RSA (e.g., Longitudinal Study of the Vocational Rehabilitation Services Program), and other funding sources, the partnerships that have evolved over the years usually do not include this component.
RSS was developed under a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant from the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services,
National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. The purpose of the SBIR program is to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector, strengthen the role of small business in meeting federal research or research and development needs, increase the commercial application of Department of Education supported research results, and improve the return on investment from federally-funded research for economic and social benefits to the Nation.

The National Center for the Study of Postsecondary Educational Support, University of Hawaii at Manoa, recently funded by the
National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, will seek to identify the nature and scope of existing supports and their effectiveness, with a specific look at technology and the center will also examine the connection between outcomes and supports in postsecondary education with those in the workplace.
The leadership of the

There is a wide variety of current research projects focusing on this concern, primarily research studies sponsored by the
National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research here in the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services and by the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation in the Office of Disability, Aging, and Long-Term Care Policy at the Department of Health and Human Services.
Demonstration centers, training and support services for potential users and service providers as well as information and referral networks were some of the primary services required of grant recipients (
National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, 1993).
In 1978, the National Institute on Handicapped Research (NIHR), later to become the
National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), was created by law to administer the research program and IRI funding moved to NIHR, which continued sole support through its Research and Training Centers (RTC) program.
