Ryan Kelly, executive director of the Mississippi Rural Health Association and Alabama Rural Health Association, both of which received All of Us minigrants via the
National Rural Health Association to drive engagement locally, said that while technology literacy is a challenge for rural enrollment, "it's a variable that can be overcome with help." Over the last year, the two state groups have been able to reach thousands of rural residents and health providers with information about the study, Kelly said.
Further, Henning-Smith offers suggestions such as "medical residency programs and how to make family practice or OBGYN attractive to medical students, introducing medical students, nurses and midwives to a rural setting context and incentivizing them to practice in those areas" (
National Rural Health Association, 2017).
In May of 2018, National Rural Health Day was awarded Outstanding Rural Health Program of the Year by the
National Rural Health Association.

These barriers include fewer mental health providers in rural areas (e.g., fewer than 20 percent of the most rural counties have mental health providers), a lack of specialty services such as child psychology, the need to travel long distances to receive care, inadequate insurance coverage for mental health, and rural social stigmas that dissuade community members from seeking help for mental health-related concerns (Center for Mental Health Services 1997; Holzer, Goldsmith, and Ciarlo 2000;
National Rural Health Association 1999; Office of Rural Health Policy 2002).
