Studies from developing countries have reported that almost half of women had reproductive tract infections (RTI), every tenth woman suffered from uterine prolapse (one of the worst gynecological morbidities), half had menstrual problems, and a significant proportion had problems related to infertility.5-8
Our study emphasizes on importance of specific type of cervical discharge in diagnosing various reproductive tract infections (RTIs).
However, the correlation between the reproductive tract infections during pregnancy and the perinatal mortality is rarely reported.
The global burden of reproductive tract infections (RTIs / STDs) is enormous and of a major public health concern, particularly in developing countries where RTIs are endemic and excluding Human Im- munodeficiency Virus (HIV) constitutes the second major cause of disease burden (after maternity related causes) in young adult women in developing countries.1 RTIs cover three types of infections 2: Sexually transmitted infections (STDs); infections that result from overgrowth of organisms normally present in the reproductive tract and infections associated with medical procedures including abortion and insertion of intra uterine devices.
CONTEXT: Small proportions of Indian women report seeking treatment for symptoms suggestive of reproductive tract infections (RTIs).
The unhygienic method of menstruation management accounts for a fairly large number of reproductive tract infections in India and unhygienic toilet habits adds to this problem.
Total 150 women attending the OPD for the first time in the Gynecology with the following complaints were screened for Reproductive Tract Infection: (a) Vaginal Discharge; (b) Cervical Discharge with Vaginitis; (c) Genital Warts; (d) Genital Ulcer; (e) Combination of above complaints.
A quarter of units did not have an acceptable policy of screening for reproductive tract infection either.
* Obstetrics and gynecology: reproductive tract infection (1.9%), abnormal bleeding (1.65%), Ante Natal care (1.65%).
A broader concern about reproductive tract infection (rather than STI) would reflect a more comprehensive and less stigmatising view of women's need for reproductive health services.
