NWF has joined local conservationists, sportsmen and town officials in opposing the massive Grand Prairie irrigation project, which would pump billions of gallons of water from the river, and the Lower White River Navigation Expansion Project, which would create an artificial navigation channel through the White River National Wildlife Refuge. Both are among the 25 most damaging and wasteful Corps water projects featured in the report Troubled Waters by NWF and Taxpayers for Common Sense.
When Carruth heard how massive irrigation and navigation projects would destroy wetlands and pollute the White River National Wildlife Refuge, his reaction was immediate: "Not on my river!"
The Army Corps of Engineers project on the White River would enlarge the existing navigation canal by dredging and/or diking 258 river miles, including more than 90 miles through the heart of the 1 57,000-acre White River National Wildlife Refuge.
The White River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1935, primarily because of its value to migratory waterfowl.
