The oldest rocks on the Moon, the low-density
anorthosites, are almost completely devoid of heavy metals and must have formed after a global event melted the entire Moon, allowing these buoyant rocks to float to the top of a magma ocean and solidify on its surface as the Moon's original, frothy crust.
There was some
anorthosite which is white rock from the moon's highlands.
Potential non-bauxite sources for alumina in the United States might include clay, alunite, and
anorthosite (Bray 2014).
The Chilas Complex comprises of gabbronorite
anorthosite pyroxenite and diorite.
The local bedrock geology consists mainly of granite and
anorthosite (Wardle et al., 1997).
Hayasaka [12] suggested that the cumulate metagabbro (pyroxenite,
anorthosite, and eucrite) in the Asago area is rather similar in petrography and geochemistry to those in the Oshima peninsula and Ayabe areas (Figure 1), thus suggesting that this metagabbro originated from a lower crustal section of oceanic crust and was derived from the T-type MORB source (i.e., OB ophiolite) (Figure 2(a)).
That team, from the European Southern Observatory and the University of Paris, found a similar signature elsewhere on Mars, but likens the rocks to
anorthosite, which is common on the moon.
To the south of this tectonic contact the geology is dominated by
anorthosite with subordinate gabbro belonging to the Tete Suite.
The surprising revelations that
anorthosite, an igneous rock rare on earth, is one of the principal lunar rocks, that the moon is layered, that both meteoritic impact and volcanism formed the craters, that the moon contains a small liquid core of molten rock that magnetized surface stones brought back by the astronauts--all these and countless other discoveries about our closest neighbor in space would have remained unknown and hardly guessed at if man had not grabbed at his chance to leave the earth.
The rock mass is mainly composed of
anorthosite and norite in the northern slope area.
