Hodges, "Subcortical dementia revisited: similarities and differences in cognitive function between progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA)," Neurocase, vol.
In 17% of cases, MRI features are in favour of progressive supranuclear palsy and in remaining 17% and 16% features are in favour of Multisystem atrophy-Cerebellar type (MSA-C) and Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD).
The syndrome of cortical visual impairment and posterior atrophy can also be caused by other diseases such as dementia with Lewy bodies and corticobasal degeneration. (34,17) Clinical features that may suggest an underlying disease other than Alzheimer's include frequent hallucinations and delusions, and fluctuating cognition (an interruption in the flow of awareness), (18) which are indicative of dementia with Lewy bodies.
Abnormal accumulation of altered tau protein is a leading indicator in a variety of neurodegenerative conditions including Alzheimer's Disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Corticobasal Degeneration. In these conditions, the development of tau pathology strongly correlates with clinical disease progression.
(1) This disorder may be considered a variant of Alzheimer disease, but can also result from corticobasal degeneration, Creutzfeldt-Jakob, dementia with Lewy bodies and/or subcortical gliosis.
Nearly half of the CBS cases have the pathological diagnosis of corticobasal degeneration (CBD).
It has been linked to other neurodegenerative disorders, including frontotemporal dementia, supranuclear palsy and corticobasal degeneration.
