Emetic episodes were assessed between two groups by calculating percentage of patients with no emesis, 1 episode, 2 episodes and >2 episodes of emesis.
In spinal anaesthesia for LSCS, hypotension, manipulation of abdominal viscera and hormonal influences are strong
emetic stimuli.
The number of
emetic episodes in both the groups were as shown in Table 6.
Intraoperative and postoperative
emetic episodes were recorded by direct questioning or by spontaneous complaints by the patients at any time during the study period--which was defined as the period starting from the anaesthetic procedure to the first 5 (five) hours in the immediate postoperative period.
An
emetic episode was defined as either a single episode or repeated episodes of vomiting or retching occurring within 1 min of each other.
As at higher doses, dexamethasone itself exerts
emetic action, we have chosen its minimum effective dose to be 0.
Five patients in group-I needed rescue
emetics as compared to 12 patients in group-II.
DISCUSSION: The complex act of vomiting involves coordination of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and abdominal musculature and is controlled by the
emetic center.
It is antiseptic, antispasmodic, antibacterial, cardio-active, stimulating to the womb and circulatory system, mildly anaesthetic and
emetic in large doses.
The haters nicknamed it "The
Emetic" thanks to the love-hate relationship. This is the story of SS William Mackinnon.
