New Delhi [India], Dec 6 ( ANI ): Air India has grounded its two pilots after the aircraft "descended rapidly and deviated from the normal glide path" at Hong Kong International Airport runway triggering a Ground Proximity Warning System alert.
Honeywell's avionics for Vietnam Airlines include the Flight Management System (FMS), Multifunction Control Display Unit, an Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS), Air Data Inertial Reference Unit (ADIRU) and Air Data Module (ADM).
Honeywell's SmartView display is based on the patented Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) terrain database.
The plaintiffs recount a number of technical defects in the aircraft including engines "susceptible of igniting and exploding", "deceleration mechanismsC*not capable of slowing the aircraft under all reasonably anticipated conditions", Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) that was "inadequately inspected and tested, provided false or nuisance warnings which interfered with the safe operation of the flight".
Honeywell Aerospace is in charge of developing the pilot-vehicle interface and providing what Sikorsky engineers call a "knowledge fusion evidence grid." Honeywell's enhanced ground proximity warning system for civil helicopters and airplanes already uses a stored database to warn pilots of upcoming terrain and obstacles with symbols and audible cues.
Synthetic vision is an integrated solution and will rely on traditional subsystems similar to traffic alert collision avoidance (TCAS), ground proximity warning system (GPWS), flight management system (FMS) and displays to provide warning functions.
The aircraft's first flight since returning to flight testing focused on all major systems, with emphasis on its radar and Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) integration, as well as its engines and Ground Proximity Warning System. Further trials will concentrate on assessing the aircraft as a whole, including the integration of the radar with the AMRAAM and Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM).
I hate to think what would have happened if the Hornet's Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) hadn't given me that hey-knucklehead-you're-about-to-hit-the-ground message.
Raytheon Aerospace Co., Madison, Miss., is being awarded a $6,999,962 modification to previously awarded firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract (N00019-00-D-0272) for the procurement of 18 flight safety upgrade kits for the C-12 aircraft to include traffic alert and collision avoidance system, enhanced ground proximity warning system, weather radar and radar altimeter system kits.
In the section on safety recommendations, the report says: 'The Board recommends a thorough review of bad weather low level abort procedure for all RAF low level operators, and that the fitting of a ground proximity warning system to all RAF aircraft should be considered.'
AlliedSignal will supply its colour weather radar system, which detects changes in the weather and airborne and ground/maritime targets; its enhanced ground proximity warning system, which warns pilots about potential terrain collisions; and its enhanced traffic and collision avoidance system, which warns pilots about potential collisions with other aircraft.
