The correlation between peritonsillar abscess and immunocompromised hosts is not well described in the literature; however it is known that the immune status of children is different from that of adults.
Peritonsillar abscess is a commonly occurring pathology among fit healthy adults.
In our patient, the fibromatosis was superimposed by an oropharyngeal infection, which created a clinical picture resembling a peritonsillar abscess. Anything that deviates from the typical course of a disease--in this case what appeared to be peritonsillar abscess--should alert the physician to the possibility of a different diagnosis and lead to reassessment of the patient.
Antibiotics also decrease the incidence of rheumatic heart disease (NNT=100) and peritonsillar abscesses. Due to the decreased incidence of glomerulonephritis, the evidence is inadequate to determine the role of antibiotics in preventing this complication.
In this article, we describe the case of an adult who presented with a lymphovenous malformation that masqueraded as a peritonsillar abscess and caused airway obstruction.
Peritonsillar abscess is believed to be part of a disease continuum that progresses from acute tonsillitis to peritonsillar cellulitis and finally to peritonsillar abscess.
Ten years later, he began conducting clinical trials of various antibiotic and steroid combinations for the treatment of peritonsillar abscess. These regimens proved to be very effective, although treatment success required relatively high doses of steroids.
Untreated pharyngitis due to this latter organism can lead to serious sequelae, such as peritonsillar abscess and rheumatic fever.

The presenting signs and symptoms of bilateral peritonsillar abscess are varied, and therefore a high index of suspicion is important for early diagnosis and treatment.
