Function s is estimated by minimizing penalized residual sum of squares and equivalent 4 degrees of freedom in GAM by using S+ version 8.1 [10].
The analyzed models showed coefficients of determination (R2) above 0.9792, standard deviation of estimate (SE) below 0.079 (decimal) and residual sum of squares (RSS) lower than 0.604 (decimal, x [10.sup.-2]).
Several possible starting values were selected for each parameter and the starting value which has the smallest residual sum of squares was accepted.

Model selection : Model comparison and selection was based on statistics of predicted residual sum of squares (PRESS) because prediction is the most important focus here.
That is, the "V" trend is expected to be the most frequent since that would imply that residual sum of squares is a minimum when correlation of the error term is smallest (negative or positive).
