There was no effect of one flexible sigmoidoscopy screen on colorectal cancer mortality when two categories of ages were examined.
However, they concluded, "colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, CTC, and various stool tests have differing levels of evidence to support their use in CRC screening, ability to detect CRC and precursor lesions, and risk of serious adverse events in average-risk adults."
Signs that can help diagnose SV on CT or MR include the whirl sign in the sigmoid mesentery, sigmoid dilatation, and intestinal air-fluid levels.1,3,10,17 Contrast enema has been used to diagnose SV in the past (mostly in children) but has a 66.7-78.6% success rate and a mortality rate that ranges from 7.7-9%.2,18 Contrast enema is not advised because of the possibility of bowel perforation, peritonitis, and risk of missing bowel gangrene.1,3,13 Sigmoidoscopy helps to diagnose the bowel torsion, shows the viability of the bowel mucosa, and contributes to the bowel detorsion.

Schoen of the division of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and his associates randomly assigned 154,900 men and women aged 55-74 years to either screening with a baseline flexible sigmoidoscopy, with a repeat screening every 3 or 5 years, or to usual care, which was defined as "whatever might have been recommended by the patient's physician," he said.

A UK-wide trial to evaluate the benefits of a one-off flexible sigmoidoscopy for people between the ages of 55 and 64 found that, after 11 years, there was a 33% reduction in the prevalence of colorectal cancer and a 43% reduction in deaths from the disease.
Some require extensive bowel preparation, and flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy can result in accidental perforations.
After hearing a description of sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy, respondents were asked whether they had ever had either test, which one was the most recent, and how long it had been since the last test.
Like sigmoidoscopy, CT colonoscopy cannot perform immediate biopsy.
For this reason, other tests and examinations, such as the FOBT and flexible sigmoidoscopy must be used.
