In recent years, there has been growing interest in so-called bone-anchored hearing aids.
Tommy, a pupil at Hemlington Hall Primary, was born with no outer ears or canals, yet the inner parts were perfectly formed, so in 2003, to aid his communication, he underwent a bone-anchored hearing aid operation where a metal plate was fixed to his skull and a hearing device clipped to the outside of his head.
