Using ultrasound scans, researchers measured the carotid artery wall thickness of more than 200 nine-year-old children whose mothers had taken part in a nutrition study during pregnancy.
On average, the carotid artery wall thickness was about one-half millimeter thicker among the patients with more gum disease.
