Short of surgery, the only gallstone therapy currently approved in the United States is treatment with chenodeoxycholic acid. Oral administration of UDCA in humans leads to a significant change in the relative proportions of the biliary and serum bile acids, such that UDCA becomes the major bile constituent (about 50 percent when a 13-15 mg/kg/day dose is given) and naturally replaces cholic and chenodeoxycholic acids. |
