Doctors Toshiaki and Yuko Kawakami have found that activity levels of Natural Killer (NK) cells, which are disease fighting cells of the immune system, play a pivotal role in the development of eczema vaccinatum in the mice.
A risk for eczema vaccinatum occurs in about 1 in 100,000 primary vaccinations (20), which can result in serious consequences requiring intensive medical care, and even (rarely) death (6).
The upcoming smallpox virus challenge studies are of special interest to the CDC and SIGA due to the successful effort by SIGA at CDC's request to help save the life of a 28-month toddler who had contracted a severe case of eczema vaccinatum (CID, 2008:46), which had arisen as a complication from smallpox vaccine administration.
