The isolate from the second patient was resistant to erythromycin and susceptible to clindamycin, exhibited the M phenotype on the double-disk diffusion assay (D test), and harbored the msrA gene, encoding an efflux pump (8).
These included drugs that have been used for decades, such as penicillin and erythromycin, as well as drugs that were only recently invented and marketed, such as telithromycin and tigecycline.
