The fado, meaning 'fate' in Portuguese is the indigenous musical form practiced by the urban poor populace of Lisbon where it had originated. Pedro (Giles Tomkins), falls out of a tired marriage to Constanza (Shannon Mercer) and into love with a fado singer he meets at a club. That's been the conundrum faced by the Hult Center's marketing staff ever since last year, when the city-owned facility booked Mariza, an internationally renowned Portuguese fado singer, shortly before the bottom dropped out of the entertainment market. |
