Forty-five patients scheduled to undergo surgery for colorectal cancer were randomly assigned to receive 200 mg of ferrous sulfate three times per day or no iron supplementation (control group) for two weeks preoperatively.
A British study found that 200 mg of ferrous sulfate (iron), taken three times a day for two months, gave excellent results when ferritin levels were low.
