This technology combines the use of fertility drugs - hormonal therapy - with artificial insemination using any of a group of techniques: intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), or oocyte (egg) donation.
Other technologies include intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), in which a single sperm is injected into a single egg during IVF, and gamete intrafallopian transfer, an alternative to IVF in which sperm and unfertilized eggs are surgically placed in a woman's fallopian tubes.
In India today, an infertile couple theoretically has recourse to a vast array of assisted-conception technologies, from first-generation technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) to newer ones such as gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT).
