Bland brands aimed at the lowest common denominator are a more recent development. McGruder's take-no-prisoners strip assails anyone who might possibly diminish American black culture, from disinterested politicians to celebrities catering to the lowest common denominator who cynically kowtow to base African-American stereotypes. There is a commercial upside to such virtuousness, in reduced running costs and low staff turnover, but it also acts as a powerful retort to lowest common denominator impulses and instincts. |
