The old women are mermaids in human form, and they are guarding Mana, a 15-year-old girl who has also eaten mermaid flesh. The fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place winners, who each received $500, were Di Wu from The Curtis Institute, who studies with Gary Graffman; Daria Rabotkina from Mannes College of Music, whose teacher is Vladimir Fehsman; and Mana Tokuna from Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, who studies with Victor Rosenbaum, respectively. Her famous open carriage ride in the pouring rain secured a place for her in the hearts of British citizens; at home in Tonga it increased her mana (mana refers to the degree to which objects and person are endowed with extraordinary powers). |
