As of May 2006, 21 subjects in the first cohort, 10 of whom were receiving concurrent TNF-alpha antagonists, received an injection of blinded study drug into the knee (n=12), ankle (n=4), wrist (n=2) or metacarpophalangeal joint (n=3).
The data collected from each of the 8 joints of the fingers (4 metacarpophalangeal joints and 4 proximal interphalangeal joints) was used to set the subsequent target goals, and the mean of these joint angles was used to calculate the performance and display the visual feedback.
When given a verbal cue, the participant flexed the arm in a neutral, "thumb-up" orientation and touched the radial border of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the index finger to the bottom of the horizontal crossbar of the music stand (Figure).
