We collected blood samples from the mothers (antecubital vein) and infants at the time of delivery and at approximately 4 days (in connection with the phenylketonuria test; range, 3-6 days) and at 13 weeks (on average, 94 days; range, 86-115 days) after delivery.
In Brazil (170 million persons and approximately 2,400,000 newborns/year), the prevalence of infectious diseases is higher than phenylketonuria (1 in 13,000) and congenital hypothyroidism (1 in 3,500).
Safety: People with the rare disorder phenylketonuria (PKU) can't metabolize phenylalanine, so they should avoid aspartame.
