The laboratory is modeled in part on the Hopkins' Applied Physics Laboratory and students can communicate remotely with Lockheed and Northrop engineers.
Portions of the funding will be managed by several DOE laboratories, including Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ($810,000), Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory ($688,000), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (144,000) and Sandia National Laboratories ($75,000).
Seagliders developed by the UW School of Oceanography and Applied Physics Laboratory are small, reusable underwater vehicles meant to operate on their own, gliding without propellers from the surface to as deep as 1,000 meters, or 3,300 feet, while collecting such information as temperature, salinity and level of dissolved oxygen.
