The caller, an Army procurement official, explained that the military had scoured its vast inventories and found nothing to counter the Iraqi proximity fuses. Built into better than 80 percent of artillery and mortar shells, the proximity fuse is essentially a miniature radar system that detects when a shell is a dozen or so feet above target, and then detonates its explosive. Shortstop is a portable and silent system that creates an electronic signal that causes rocket artillery shells and mortar fitted with proximity fuses, to explode prematurely by falsely signaling that they have reached their target. |
