This designation is for the prevention of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in premature neonates of less than 32 weeks of gestational age and for the treatment of RDS in premature neonates of less than 37 weeks of gestational age. The 31-year-old housewife and mother of three daughters suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome, a complication from pneumonia that causes lung capillaries to leak and, in severe cases, can lead to multiple organ failure. Nevertheless, the eight successes demonstrate that "partial liquid ventilation leads to clinical improvement and survival in some infants with severe respiratory distress syndrome who are not expected to survive," say Corinne Lowe Leach of Children's Hospital and the State University of New York in Buffalo and her colleagues. |
