One common feature exhibited by all these cells was an abundance of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) with dilated cisternae (figure 4). Nascent particles were formed by the juxtaposition of viral nucleocapsids along cytoplasmic membranes of the budding compartment (the membrane region between the rough endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi complex) or occasionally on the membranes of the rough endoplasmic reticulum that form the outer layer of the nuclear membrane. Spindle cells did not show well-formed cellular junctions, mostly resembling fibroblasts with distended rough endoplasmic reticulum. |
