Pregnancies that fail in the first trimester-ones that end in embryonic or fetal death or in incomplete spontaneous abortion, ones whose inevitable outcome is spontaneous abortion and ones characterized by the absence of an embryo in the gestational sac-traditionally have been managed with dilation and curettage. Winter and Hokanson (1964) indicated that spontaneous abortion may not be a significant effect of chronic nitrate exposure at levels sufficient to induce methemoglobinemia in cattle. Emerging uses include tests for diagnosing spontaneous abortions or designing personalized versions of brand-name drugs that could increase their effectiveness. |
