Streptococcus pneumoniae, a leading cause of baceremia, sinusitis, otitis media, bacterial meningitis, and bacterial pneumonia, causes substantial illness and death in persons worldwide (1). This is the first vaccine to combine parts of two bacteria called Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae, says coauthor Roman Prymula, an epidemiologist at the University of Defence in Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic. In contrast, resistance to virginiamycin was more prevalent among coagulase-negative staphylococci versus Enterococcus or Streptococcus isolates (Tables 2 and 3). |
