DOTS is the internationally recommended strategy for TB control and is based on a 6-month treatment regimen with first-line drugs (isoniazid, rifampin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol) for new patients and an 8-month treatment regimen with isoniazid, rifampin, pyrazinamide, ethambutol, and streptomycin for re-treatment patients (3).
Steyger's research focuses on how drugs such as streptomycin enter and kill hair cells, the sensory cells in the inner ear that are pivotal to hearing.
This finding first came to light shortly after the discovery of streptomycin was reported in 1944.
