They can be emitted directly from diesel engines and wood fires or created indirectly in the atmosphere by the interaction of ammonia, water vapor, and other gases with sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, two pollutants primarily released by industry and cars.
Large volcanic eruptions send much sulfur dioxide high into the atmosphere, where the gas forms aerosols of tiny droplets.
Particles of various sizes and makeups induced the widest-ranging effects, but nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide also had an effect on certain indicators.
