Elgar's study environment has been compared with working in a washing machine: He works in the surf zone, investigating how waves and currents change the shape of the seafloor in shallow water.
After setting out the context and preparatory measures, he discusses such topics as providing a stable work base within the surf zone, placing outfalls under protected sites or obstructions, creating tunnel outfalls and their risers, selected polyethylene outfalls, and difficult or impossible outfalls.
The whale continues to swim in and around the surf zone, Caminhas said, but it is not caught in anything.
