The helicopter's tail rotor snapped and the pilot had less than a minute after equipment failure before the aircraft crashed at Lagore, Co Meath.
During landing, even a sudden change in the wind direction could affect tail rotor efficiency.
Police have said the helicopter might have struck a tree with its tail rotor, causing it to crash.
