The primary advantages of the NPN are high temporal resolution (averaged observations at least hourly), and a vertical resolution of 250 m. In preliminary tests studying the drying of pastes and mortars, a vertical resolution of 1 mm was found to provide the necessary vertical detail [15] and so a focus of this work was on count variations from changes in horizontal resolution. The scanning tunneling microscope has reached a horizontal resolution of 2 angstroms and a vertical resolution of a few hundredths of an angstrom, opening up new dimensions in the study of surfaces. |
