Fetters was a co-investigator on a National Institute of Health (NIH)/National Institute on Drug Abuse grant to study the neuromotor functioning of infants who were exposed to cocaine and as a co-investigator on a NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) research grant to study the motor development of infants with white matter disease who were born prematurely. A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) image of the brain showed multiple, small, contrast-enhanced white matter lesions around the semiovale center (cranially from the lateral ventricles) bilaterally and in the right parietal cortex. In animals whose mothers had had ultrasound sessions that added up to 30 minutes or more, the scientists found that a significant number of neurons destined for the brain's outer layers of gray matter had become improperly embedded in inner layers of white matter. |
