Hosenfeld, one of 460 Germans honored by Yad Vashem, was in the Nazi-occupied Polish capital from 1940 to 1944. an honour bestowed by the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem to people who helped Jews during the war. The pontiff, 82, said Yad Vashem reminded him of his landmark 2006 visit to Auschwitz - a time when he did mention his background as 'a son of the German people' in World War Two. |
