Of 54 samples (49 serum and 5 cerebrospinal fluid [CSF]) that were negative for DENV and yellow fever virus, SLEV RNA was detected in 6 (4 serum and 2 CSF) (6). Kiple here fails to recognize that in any human society, there are always a sizable grouping of newcomers and strangers--newborn babies, infants and young Children--and that, in areas where yellow fever is locally endemic (and where no vaccination program has intervened), the yellow fever virus almost always has access to youthful human hosts. Dengue virus is a member of the flavivirus (Flaviviridae) family, which includes hepatitis C virus (HCV), yellow fever virus and West Nile virus, as well as a number of viruses associated with bioterrorism. |
