The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of 1-MCP, ethanol and heat treatment on ripening and internal browning of 'Laetitia' plums under cold storage.
Treatments were storage under air atmosphere (AA, 0.5 [+ or -] 0.5[degrees] C / 85 [+ or -] 5% RH); storage under AA with 1-MCP; storage under controlled atmosphere (CA, 1.5 kPa of O2 and 1.5 kPa of C[O.sub.2], at 0.7 [+ or -] 0.5[degrees] C / 93 [+ or -] 3% RH); and storage under CA with 1-MCP.
Fruit was randomized and divided into 3 lots for the following treatments: (1) untreated and referred to as the control and (2) treated with 5 [micro]g/L 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP).
Previous studies reported that 1-MCP has positive effects on delaying ripening and senescence of climacteric fruits and vegetables, such as guava [13], pear [9], plum [10], and tomato [14].
The cultivars varied in their responsiveness to 1-MCP, with CrimsonCrisp showing the most promise for long-term storage using the product.
Use of 1-MCP in apple storage was intensified because the 1-MCP effectively inhibits the action of ethylene and controls the maturation and senescence of fruits (McCORMICK et al., 2010; AMBAW et al., 2011; MAZZURANA et al., 2016).
