In addition to these main components, there are a number of smaller schemes within legal aid: advice by way of representation (ABWOR), enabling a solicitor to represent a client in specified court or tribunal proceedings, and two statutory duty-solicitor schemes which provide immediate assistance and advice for unrepresented defendants in magistrates' courts, or for people detained in police stations.
An off-shoot, known as ABWOR, was added in 1982, and in 1992/3 provided 50,000 acts of assistance.
