Neuropsychiatric symptoms were measured with the noncognitive portion of the Alzheimer Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-noncog) and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI).
Patients randomized to cholinesterase inhibitors improved 1.7 points on the 120-point NPI scale compared with placebo (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.87-2.57); there was no significant difference between the groups when the ADAS-noncog scale was used as the outcome measure.
When completed subject analysis was used, there was a slight increase in effect size of the completed subject analysis of NPI (1.96-point improvement; 95% CI, 1.07-2.84) and ADAS-noncog (0.39-point improvement; 95% CI 0.30-0.47) but not in ADL or IADL.
