The SM-3 Block IIA is being developed cooperatively by the US and Japan and operates as part of the AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense
system, the naval component of the US Ballistic Missile Defense System.
The US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) said in a statement that the SM-3 Block IIA "is being developed cooperatively by the US and Japan and operates as part of the AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense
system." MDA Director Sam Greeves said in this regard that this was "a superb accomplishment and key milestone for the SM-3 Block IIA return to flight." The statement confirmed that "based on observations and initial data review, the test met its objectives," and that "program officials will continue to evaluate system performance." It indicated that the target missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Kauai, Hawaii, where the USS John Finn (DDG-113) "detected and tracked the target missile" with its onboard AN/SPY-1 radar using the Aegis Baseline weapon system.

The US also intends, the report said, to create a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) defense system (a land-based version of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense
System), an anti-missile system similar to the Patriot and Iron Dome systems, for Gulf allies to defend themselves against possible nuclear aggression by Iran.

High demand in the region is primarily driven by the five major missile defense programs: the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense
(BMD) System, the Ground-Based Mid-Course Defense System, the Terminal High-Altitude Air Defense System (THD), the Medium Extended Air Defense System and the European Phased Adaptive Approach (P) Defense System.
Mark Ludovico, Joint Staff J6, explained that with the two ships and more than 40 aircraft flying on any given day of the event, the Navy team stress tested the IFF integrated suite and Aegis ballistic missile defense
system Mode 5 in partnership with COMOPTEVFOR under 13 separate initiatives.
